3 New Compelling Books on Drugs and Addiction
Read Them and Heed Them
United States of America (Press Release) January 4, 2009 -- I Am Your Disease (The Many Faces of Addiction) was published in October, 2006. "Mom, nobody wakes up one day and decides to be an addict." The stories contained in this book are about people from every walk of life, socioeconomic levels, religious and ethnic backgrounds whose lives were intertwined with people who didn't "decide to be an addict." They all share one common bond - living with, and loving an addicted person. Contained within the pages of this book are stories by bereaved parents who have suffered the ultimate loss: the loss of their precious child. Read how addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol or gambling, destroys not only the addicted person, but their entire circle of friends and family. No one escapes the tentacles of addiction. Like an octopus it reaches its deadly arms around us and squeezes the very life out of all of us. The profiles of these children will change your mind about what kind of people do drugs - Good Kids Do Drugs Too.
McGinnis's co-author on this book is Heiko Ganzer, LCSW, CASAC of Phoenix Psychotherapy who wrote the brilliant and brutally honest narrative, I Am Your Disease by the Anonymous Addict. This alone will send chills down your spine.
Slaying the Addiction Monster - An All-Inclusive Look at Drug Addiction in America Today is the outstanding sequel to I Am Your Disease. The author digs deeper into the squalid, frightening world of drugs and addiction. Gone is the stereotypical image of the dysfunctional drug addict cloaked in the darkness of despair on the streets, disheveled and ravaged by the effects of drugs. These images are replaced today with the clean-cut, good looking boy and girl next door, the high school athlete, the musician, the All-American kid, until they too can no longer hide their scars, both physical and emotional. Included are interviews by leading addiction researchers, how to perform an Intervention, how the teen brain differs from the mature brain, Enabling and just about everything you want to know about addiction.
The Addiction Monster and the Square Cat is a children's book geared toward 5th and 6th graders and up. The book tells about young lives, children whose dreams and future were stolen by drugs. The main character in the story is a charismatic, talented, handsome, smart, loving young man who made a mistake in his youth only to have that mistake follow him throughout his young life until his tragic death at the age of 31 from a multi-drug overdose. The story is a fictionalized version of the author's sons' struggle with, and his death from the disease of addiction. The story is told with humor and pathos by the sassy but lovable family cat. Kids who won't listen to their teachers or parents will pay attention to what the square cat says. This book is educational without being preachy, informative without being gory. It gets its message across in a way that everyone can understand.
These three books are by the author, Sheryl Letzgus McGinnis, who lost her son who was a Paramedic and an RN, to the disease of addiction. The books are chock full of advice and information for all.
