Questions

What is a sober coach/companion?

A sober companion is someone who will stay with you anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will help you acclimate to living life without the use of alcohol or drugs. The addict is so used to getting through day after day with the help of their drug of choice that learning to live life without that crutch requires relearning a lot of basic life skills. Your sober companion will help you through that process.

Your sober companion will be with you through many of your everyday tasks such as going to the grocery store, the bank, a doctor’s appointment, the health club, etc. They will also accompany you to 12-step meetings, church or spiritual functions. A sober companion will guide you through finding a sponsor, beginning to work your steps and all kinds of recovery oriented functions.

Why use a sober companion rather than get a sponsor, you may ask. Unlike a sponsor, a sober coach's only job is to assist you on a day to day basis, being there for your every need or question. Whereas sponsors need to attend to their own everyday lives and cannot dedicate every moment to serving your personal needs. Don't misunderstand -- a 12-step sponsor is still a critical part of your recovery process. Your sober companion will encourage you to find a responsible sponsor to work with.

How long you will need a companion and how many hours per day or week will depend on your individual needs. You may need a companion for 24 hours a day in the beginning or for just a few hours each day. You may only want a companion for the first week or two out of treatment or you may want a companion for several months. Our trained staff will help you determine what best suits your needs.
